Tonight Lesley and I had the privilege of attending the "Ode To Nonsense" at Her Majesty's Theatre in Adelaide.
This is a brand new opera about the life of Edward Lear most well known for the poem "The Owl and The Pussycat".
This was a superb production with great performances from the principles in Nicholas Lester,Johanna Allen and Adam Goodburn.
There was a wonderful cast of young people including some amazing young acrobats.
The costumes and special lighting effects were superb as was the music.
There were lots of families with young children there and it is a great way to be introduced to Opera.
The Musical Director was Adelaide's Tim Sexton who is really the driving force behind much of what happens in the Musical world of the Arts in Adelaide and beyond.
Hopefully this new production will tour other places so if you get a chance to see it go for sure.
If you are a mover and a shaker maybe you can facilitate a greater exposure for this masterpiece.
Below are some vimeo links to the making of this production.
Slingsby Productions and all involved are to be congratulated.
Since I wrote this post I have discovered that Edward Lear was a very accomplished bird artist.
There is an emphasis on his love of birds in the opera.
It appears that he actually illustrated many of the Birds in John Gould's famous book on Australian Birds.
Indeed it would appear that Gould was not actually a great bird artist but his wife and Edward Lear were really the artists behind his success.
