World War 1 Soldiers Physical and Bayonet Training

I recently came across an amazing panoramic photograph taken in the first world war time.
My Grandfather the late Bill Buck, was an Australian Infantry Soldier based in England during the first world war.

The photograph is of soldiers taken at the Headquarters Gymnasium Aldershot.

Here is a link to a blog article about this place.

The pic was taken by Panora Ltd. who specialised in panoramic group photos of large groups.

I have managed to scan the photo into 5 separate pics but have not been able to merge them into a successful digital panorama yet.

If anyone can advise I would be grateful.

PS. I think I know what I did wrong now so watch this space.

"My Grandma's Bible" by Geoff Thompson

My Grandma and I quite some time ago.

Grandparents can be an amazing influence on our lives.

And if we are Grandparents ourselves we have a huge role we can play with our own grandchildren.

My Grandmother died when she was 76 of a heart condition.

She was only a few years older than what I am now.

She came to our wedding in 1971 and then died a few days later.

Grandma was a quiet, gentle English war bride from the 1st World War.

My Grandfather was in England and Europe as an Australian soldier.

They married in England and then moved back to Australia with their first child coming with them.

When I was 8 years old Grandma gave me a Bible.

It was the first Bible I ever had and I still have it.

I tried to read it back then and had been to Sunday School but I wasn't really able to get into it and understand it except for the basic stories I had been taught.

After she died I came to own her own small pocketable Bible.

I still have it.

Very small print.

I don't know how she read it.

In her Bible she had underlined many verses.

As I am now a Christian I understand the emphasis of the passages she underlined and I think
how lovely it would be to now have a talk about the the things of God and her faith.

The influence of Godly Parents, Grandparents and Relatives can have an amazing result long after they are gone.

I believe she would have been in prayer for her family and Grandchildren in particular.

Often when we pray we may never see the results of prayer in our lifetime but prayers are eternal and I am sure many are realized.

Here are the passages she had underlined in her Bible.

John 1:12

John 1:12 King James Version (KJV) 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

John 14:7
Acts 13:38,39
Romans 3:23
Romans 6:23
Ephesians 2:3
2 Thessalonians 1:8
Hebrews 7:25
Hebrews 9:27
James 2:10
1Peter 2:24
1 John 2:12
Jude 1: 24-25

If you put these passages into  the Bible Gateway you can read them for yourself.

Better still look them up in the Bible.

Are you determined to be special in the life of a child?

Bindara Station-Our Heritage

Bindara Station--Darling River, NSW 1959

Bill,Ted and Lucy before moving to Bindara.

When I was 13 years old I went on a long weekend holiday to Bindara Station in NSW.
I went with my Father,Glen Thompson and Grandfather,Bill Buck.
Bill Buck, had grown up on the station, raised by his grandparents.
On that weekend I learnt a lot about our family heritage on my mother's side of the family and have learnt a lot more since.
Bill enlisted in the 1st world war as an infantryman and was stationed in England and fought in Europe.
Serious war in the trenches with rifles and bayonets.
He seldom talked about those days in later life.
He did however meet my Grandmother,Lucy and they married in England.
My Uncle ted was born in England and Bill brought his Bride and one year old son to live in Australia.
They went straight to Bindara Station to live  on the Darling River in outback NSW.
My Grandmother lasted about a year with the heat and flies and little in the way of he modern appliances of the time.
I understand she gave my Grandfather an ultimatum and they moved to Adelaide where my Aunty and my Mother were born.
Getting back to the holiday.
It was a wonderful trip and I was introduced to station life that included mustering sheep and lamb marking which was an eye opener to me.
Getting up early in the morning and starting with an amazing breakfast at the neighbouring station (Willotia I think) which was prepared in a purpose built cook house.
Bacon, eggs, chops, sausages and all the trimmings.
There is some 8mm home movie  of that holiday and also a few months later when my mother and young brothers came up also.
Highlights were travelling about the station in Landrovers equipped with walkie talkies and the fantastic wildlife.
Kangaroos,Emus, Birdlife and of  course the Darling River.
This was 1959.
In those days it was common for people to hunt rabbits and kangaroos with rifles with I was right into.
I got chastised for being a bit too gun happy and that was the beginnings of my becoming first an observer and later a photographer of wildlife.
Bindara was where I first saw Apostle Birds which became one of my favourite Australian Birds.
Their descendants are still plentiful on the station.
The river in those days was so clear you could see the sandy bottom not like the muddy water of today.
There were Murray Cod in the River in plentiful supply in those days.
In the early days Paddle Steamers plied their trade on the Darling which joins the Murray river at Wentworth.
The station homestead in 1959 was magnificent and still stands today.
In 1959 the property was owned and worked by Harry and George Packer who were cousins of my Grandfather.
They had 2 young girls  and 2 boys in their families respectively.
You can visit and stay now with the current owners Bill and Barb Arnold.

Bill Buck-My Grandfather

Bill,Ted and Lucy

Growing up I had a wonderful relationship with my Grandparents Bill and Lucy Buck.
Bill was a 1st world war Australian soldier who met my Grandmother while stationed in England.
He had grown up largely on a sheep station in NSW located next to the Darling River.
He was an amazing man who was not a great conversationalist as he had been involved in hand to hand combat in the war in Europe.
He tended to not want to talk about those days.
His wife Lucy was just a wonderful quiet lady who really spoilt all us grandchildren.
Bill was many of the unsung heroes of the war.
He once showed me his scars from bayonet wounds.
Tomorrow Australians and New Zealanders observe ANZAC day to remember the fallen in the world wars.
These men and women were absolute heroes in what they did.
Most not wanting to engage in warfare but believed it was their duty.
We remember them all with great gratitude and love.
