Konica Auto Reflex TC and 2 Lenses.

I was recently staying in South Australia's Riverland for a few days and we called in at our favourite Collectables store in Paringa.

It's called "Cammies".

We love it as there is a fantastic collection of things to look through but we always buy some of the brilliant home made jams and chutneys that are on sale.

I always look at their used cameras but I don't recall ever buying one there.

Well this time I found a treasure.

The Konica Autorflex TC 35mm film camera.

There was also a Konica Hexanon 40mm F1.8 "pancake" lens and a 200mm Tokina F3.5 telephoto lens.

I could not pass on the price and the fact it was all in good working order.

I am in the process of shooting some colour film through the camera and when I have the results I will do  a review on my youtube channel and also post it here.

W C Brooker- Pastor, Mentor,Businessman,Family Man,Sports Administrator Photographer and Much More.

It is amazing how one can stumble across a treasure trove quite innocuosly.

I was invited to lunch one Sunday and my hostess showed me a small card commemorating the fact that the Queenstown Church of Christ Football team won their premiership in 1946.

It had an action pic on the front of a footballer.

Valmai told me a little bit about the footy club's background and this prompted me to to do an internet search.

Well it didn't take long to hit "gold".

Enter a vast collection of photography and some home movies all produced before 1946 by one W C Brooker.

He was a Pastor, Businessman, Evangelist, Sports Enthusiast and much more.

His collection I found on the the Website of the State Library of South Australia.

The file numbers for the collection are noted with each picture and the State library has given permission for these images to be reproduced here.
For any similar use one should contact the State Library of South Australia.

Here are some extracts about his life.

"DEATH OF PASTOR  BROOKER (25/3/47 article in paper)

Church Of Christ Cleric For 42 Years Pastor W. C. Brooker, who died yesterday at the age of 72. was
preacher at the Church of Christ. Queenstown. for 42 years.
While still in the furniture business in Rundle street, city. Pastor Brooker preached at the church for
10 years. He gave up his business32 years ago to become a full-time preacher.
He made the decision to become a cleric after his seven-year-old son had recovered from serious injuries received in an accident.
He was born at Hindmarsh, and had lived at Alberton for 32 years.
He preached his first sermon at the age of 18, and delivered more than 10,000 addresses during his life.
He was Federal President of the Churches of Christ of Australia from 1916 until 1920. and was State
President in 1910.
He was on the State Home Mission committee for 30 years, and at the time of hisdeath was a member of the advisory board and a seal bolder. ,
Other official positions held by Pastor Brooker were chairman of the Port Adelaide Seamen's Mission for 17 years, president of the South Australian Alliance for five years, and a member and past chief
ruler of the Independent Order of Rechabites.
As a young man. he studied medicine for four years.
He leaves a widow and three children. Mr. William Brooker and Mesdames J. Hall and D. Broadbent."

I came across some of W C's photography last year in a Churches Of Christ Jubilee Pictorial Publication.
The book did not acknowledge the photographers.

When I found pastor Brooker's online collection I recognised some of the shots that were in that book.

At the time when I saw this book I thought how well the photographs had been done.

Obviously done by someone with a lot of photographic skill and knowledge.

I intend to do some more research on this man and his work and to do some more posts featuring his work.

My Vivian Maier Experience-Glen Thompson's Photography

I am currently going through my dad's archive of negatives taken in the 1940's and 50's.
I am coming across pics I have never seen before and neither has anyone else.
I hope ,God willing, to put on an exhibition of his photos one day.
This blog may not get much update for a while.
This is a major project.
See earlier posts on my Dad's photography and influence on my photography.
To my knowledge no one else has seen these below  pics before.
Scanned from negatives.
My Dad didn't print everything he photographed.
He processed his pics in a makeshift home darkroom with an enlarger he made himself.

Another classic vintage camera -Finetta 88

We have a friend Jim who is a real Aussie character.
A tough man with a heart of gold who has done hard manual work all his life and still does at 81.
We see him regularly each week for coffee on his "rounds" and he sometimes brings me old cameras he has accumulated while doing odd jobs for people.
The latest he has given me I had not seen the likes of before. A1940-50 interchangeable non slr 35mm camera.
I researched it on the net and soon identified it as a Finetta  88.
This one is labeled as a Hanimar  which was it's name in America and Australia.
The cameras were made in Germany.
Anyway I have loaded a film in it to see how it performs.
Below is a useful link I found on the net.

I Love old cameras.

As a photographer it occurs to some that when they have cameras in the family that are no longer useful or someone has died they wonder if I would like them.
I don't think I have ever said no.
Today our dear friend Jim and his son Chris dropped in with 4 cameras Jim had in his shed which he gifted to me.
A rather interesting collection.
Here are some pics of Jim and Chris with the cameras and some internet links to their specs.
By today's standards some unusual and strange specimens from the world of camera technology.
The Maximatic is very basic and I had trouble finding any useful information.
Probably would give similar results to a Holga or Diana but using 35mm film.

Discovering Photographic Genius

One of my favourite things and I guess it is so for many photographers is to find old pictures and negatives that are "lost" or unknown.
I have alluded to many photos in my familie's collections on this blog before.
A discovery of "lost" photography  has been taking the world by storm.
See the link below to see all the excitement about Vivien Maier.

http://nypost.com/2014/03/22/recluse-nanny-turns-out-to-be-photography-genius/

I look at her story and wonder what is going to happen to all my unpublishd slides, movies, negatives, audio tapes, video tapes when I am gone.
I am sure many of us are not unlike Vivien if not necessarily as talented.

S.W.Jackson-Early Australian Bird Photographer and Naturalist

I love collecting old photos and in particular like reading about and looking up information about photographers from a bygone era.
Especially Wildlife and Bird Photographers.
One person I have come across was S.W. Jackson.
I discovered him in a book by Bernard O'Reilly.
O'reilly wrote 3 Australian books.
"Green Mountains"
"Cullenbenbong"
and "Over the Hills".
They are classic Australian Stories.
"Green Mountains" is an account of a lost Aircraft ( a Stimson) in the rainforests of Queensland.
Bernard O'Reilly found the wreck and their were two survivors.
"Green Mountains" is an Australian classic and a true story.
Below is an extract from "Over the Hills" about how photographers like S.W., Jackson from the wet plate days went about their business.Bernard O'Reilly is telling about his experience as a young assistant to the photographer. The process is a far cry from our snapping away with a digital camera.

And here is are links to wikipedia about S W Jackson and also some of his work.

More Vintage Photography

I still continue to add to my collection of vintage black and white photography.
Here are a few examples.
Photography has long been a popular pastime for families.
I do not know the author of some of these so I trust copyright has long since expired.
These are from the collection of the late Joe Brooks courtesy of Phil Brooks.
Some would have been taken by Joe on a box brownie or a folding Kodak.

Glen Thompson my Dad and Inspiration

This is not a photograph but a scan of a Catalina Painting
My Dad, Glen Thompson was an amazing man who died at 70 of cancer.
He was a great inspiration to me and to many. He was a jack of all trades and master of all of them.
He was an accountant in business but also a great photographer, handyman, mechanic, woodworker, metal worker and so much more.
He was a catalina pilot in the 2nd world war.
His interests were many and captured many of them in his photography and home movies.
He taught me and I first learnt photography on his folding Kodak Retina 35mm camera.
He would have loved this digital age as he was always ahead of everyone else in adopting new technology. I have a huge collection of his work and just a few shots are shown here.
Click on  the labels below to find more references and pics.
