More from Oswald Chambers
I encourage any Christian who does not follow "My Utmost for His Highest" by Oswald Chambers to do so.
“My Joy…Your Joy”
By Oswald Chambers
These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. —John 15:11
What was the joy that Jesus had? Joy should not be confused with
happiness. In fact, it is an insult to Jesus Christ to use the word happiness
in connection with Him. The joy of Jesus was His absolute
self-surrender and self-sacrifice to His Father— the joy of doing that
which the Father sent Him to do— “…who for the joy that was set before
Him endured the cross…” (Hebrews 12:2). “I delight to do Your will, O my God…” (Psalm 40:8).
Jesus prayed that our joy might continue fulfilling itself until it
becomes the same joy as His. Have I allowed Jesus Christ to introduce
His joy to me?
Living a full and overflowing life does not rest in bodily health, in circumstances, nor even in seeing God’s work succeed, but in the perfect understanding of God, and in the same fellowship and oneness with Him that Jesus Himself enjoyed. But the first thing that will hinder this joy is the subtle irritability caused by giving too much thought to our circumstances. Jesus said, “…the cares of this world,…choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful” (Mark 4:19). And before we even realize what has happened, we are caught up in our cares. All that God has done for us is merely the threshold— He wants us to come to the place where we will be His witnesses and proclaim who Jesus is.
Have the right relationship with God, finding your joy there, and out of you “will flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). Be a fountain through which Jesus can pour His “living water.” Stop being hypocritical and proud, aware only of yourself, and live “your life…hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). A person who has the right relationship with God lives a life as natural as breathing wherever he goes. The lives that have been the greatest blessing to you are the lives of those people who themselves were unaware of having been a blessing.

Wayside Chapel farewell for Graham Long
Our family has known Graham Long and his wife Robyn for a long time. I have taken the liberty to post this message from the Wayside Chapel which is a wonderful tribute. John Owen is the young man replacing Graham as the new CEO.
"Dear Inner Circle,
Have you ever emerged from an event or a moment that left you feeling somehow, changed; knowing you had just been elevated out of time, and been touched by the awesome? Surely last Sunday afternoon was such a moment. Close to 600 of you, our beloved Inner Circle, came from all over Australia, to attend our Celebration Sunday event to thank Graham for his contribution. At the same time we recognised that we have found ourselves on a path to a destiny where, “Love Over Hate” is not a slogan but lived, real, and embodied in us all. At the event we were all surprised and delighted that in the front row, sat Malcolm and Lucy Turnbull. What a nightmare of a week they had just experienced, and who of us in that spot would have wanted to face a large public audience? To have them fly up from Canberra on Sunday especially to attend our event was truly remarkable. It spoke volumes of the Turnbull’s love of Wayside, Graham and our continued mission. When Malcolm addressed the audience, he didn’t just speak, but, opened his heart to us – what a moment!
For over two years, Graham and our Board have carefully planned generational change in this succession. Finding a new leader is a tough assignment but no plan would have worked unless the current leader had the extraordinary ability to step out of a role in which he was currently thriving. For years, Graham has been teaching that whenever we find ourselves thriving in an occupation, or in a relationship, at our happiest, we find ourselves to be “necessary, significant but not central”. It’s been a joy to hear him teach this, but also an inspiration to see him live it out in this succession process.
This week, I've been flooded with story after story of lives slowly turning around through participation in our art, gardening, karaoke and evening bingo. We know good things are going to happen when the driving question changes from “What can I get?” to “What can I give?” We are seeing more and more people from our community moving into roles that serve others, everywhere I look I see sparks of life shining brightly. A few months ago I was deeply concerned for a young woman who had gone missing. This morning she tapped me on the shoulder, smiling but nervous. She has just gotten out of rehab and trying to do all she can to avoid bad company, “Good wins in the end right?”, she asked me. I replied with a smile "That’s our hope and we’ve staked our lives on it”.
Thanks for being part of this inner circle,
Jon

PS. We premiered two very special videos at Celebration Sunday, of members of the Inner Circle sharing their own personal messages of thanks to Graham. What makes you a real photographer?
Based on my definition there are not a lot of "real" photographers these days.
You need to use a tripod to be a real photographer!
In the early days of photography it was a must.
Do I use one all the time?
Very rarely.
One of my favourite photography authors is Bryan Peterson.
In his book "Understanding Exposure" he emphasised time and time again "first place your camera firmly on the tripod."
Even in this day and age of image stabilised lenses and cameras he still probably uses that as a mantra.
I tend to shoot hand hold most of the time and there are times when I wish I hadn't.
Back in the day when I was doing weddings I always used to take my tripod with me.
1. To get steady sharp photos.
2. In case I struck low light.
3.To maintain eye contact with people, mainly in group photos, while I pressed the shutter.
4. This next one is a great use of the tripod when you might not even put the camera on the tripod.
If you are wanting to do family and bridal party group photos and you are at a location and it is just after the ceremony and you are about to get started.
If you are at a location where the wedding has been outdoors and people may be mingling and talking and having a bit of a cocktail party.
They are scattered all over the place.
Then is when I would pick the spot where I wanted to do my group photos and then set up the tripod
where I would be shooting from.
I would then announce to all the key people " hi folks, the bride and groom are now ready for family photos can you all gather where the tripod is thank you."
Now people associate the tripod with real photographers.
Professionals!
You will find this works a treat .
They might not know who you are but they know what a tripod is.
Try it at your next wedding.
"Real Photographers" use tripods.

Finding Treasure
From the front cover of oils and watercolours. |
The other day I found a treasure.
A book called "Oils and Watercolour" by Ivars Jansons.
This is a collection of the author's paintings.
I first came across his paintings in a gallery in the Dandenongs in Victoria.
A marvellous Australian painter who originally migrated to Australia from Latvia and Germany as a refugee form his war torn Latvia.
He came to Australia as a 10 year old.
The book is in great condition and signed by the artist who is no longer with us.
His art is brilliant.
You will find lots of his work posted on pinterest.
I like his introduction in his preface to the book.
It is worth the price of the book alone.
"For me painting is not merely a mechanical activity. It is a creative work, involving emotions, insight and fine tuning of ones aesthetic senses.
This creative work is an activity born of inspiration. On being guided by the Spirit it has very chance of adequately reproducing a feeling or experience on canvas, so that others may share that experience. There is no doubt that the degree of success of a work of art is determined by the amount of inspiration which precedes it. Credit must be given to God, the author and giver of emotions, insight, talents and indeed of creation itself"
This whole introduction is pretty much how I see my photography as an art form.

"The Ambition" by Lee Strobel.
Until now I have not been a fan of Christian themed fiction with maybe a few exceptions.
I found this book the other day in a Christian bookshop on "special" ($5)
One of the best $5 I have spent for a long time.
I have read Lee Strobel's books on how he became a Christian and have reported that elsewhere on this blog.
I did not know of this book.
It is very good and will intrigue most people Christian or otherwise.
Google for reviews of the book and you will see what I mean.
You can get it as an audiobook.

What I am reading.
Hi.
I occasionally review books I have read on here.
I am currently reading "All the King's Men" by Denis Brien.
This book is written by local South Australian cricket identity Denis Brien.(Rocka)
It is about the History of the Hindmarsh Cricket Club from 1857 to 1897.
It became the West Torrens Cricket Club where I used to play cricket.
Denis is a long time player and servant of the club and a great local historian.
If you like cricket ,especially with a South Australian flavour, you should buy the book.
Here is something from the club newsletter.

Talkin' about my Generation 6- Wally Wunnugmurra
In 1970 and 1971 I spent a year in Darwin. In that time I worked in the PMG department, played Cricket and Australian Rules football(AFL) and also spent the first 6 months of my marriage in Darwin.
I have many fond memories of this time as I have posted on similar articles on this blog.
One of my team mates in the Parap Wanderers Football Club was Wally Wunnugmurra. I never really knew how to spell his name back then so I hope i have it right now.
I was amazed by the standard of the players in Darwin and Wally was right up there with the best of them.
He was highly regarded in Darwin and his community.
I recently came across some letters I had written to my Grandparents while living in Darwin.
In one of the letters I gave Wally a mention.
"just a quick note to say howdy. As you can see we had a win on Saturday.Everyone went well and Wally Wunnugmurra took probably the best high mark ever taken" 16/2/71
The win would have been either against Waratahs or Nightcliffe.
They were the only two wins we had for the season.
Also there was a newspaper clipping which I have reproduced here.
Over the last few years I have seen his name pop up in Northern Territory affairs and from what I can gather he has fulfilled a lot of the expectations many had for him back then.
I was in awe of the abilities of players like Wally and Darwin and it's people left a lasting impression on me.
