Postal Institute Football Club Photo 1966 and 1967

In 1966 I joined the Postal Institute Football Club which was entering the South Australian Amateur League at The A3 level.
I had left the West Adelaide Football Club earlier in the year at the encouragement of some workmates who played for "Postals".
Players were mainly workers from the original Postmaster General's Department although outsiders were encouraged to join.
In this year 1966 we won the A3 premiership which elevated us to A2 the following year.
We played off in the A2 grand final but were beaten.
We did then get elevated to A1 the next year where we won our share of matches.
I believe the calibre of players we had in those 3 years was very good and many could have played League Footy in the SANFL.
Some had already and one of these guys in particular Darryl Webb who was a 17 year old Centre Half Forward in this photograph went on to play for North Adelaide and South Australia.
I have another photo taken a couple of years after this so will add that when I find it.
I would love to hear from any Postal's players who come across this.
I am aware sadly that some have passed on.

Ian Goed has kindly sent some statistics from the 1970 year of Postals.

I have just met with ian Goed, a past player yesterday(19/5/21)
and he gave me these two pictures. One of the Postals Footy club from probably 1968 and also the Postals Cricket Club, I played a handful of games for the cricket club but I am not in the photo.

    1. Hi unknown. Yes it is Roger Sweet. When I was in Darwin Sweetie was working in the bank. We played cricket together in the DAC Cricket Club(Darwin Aviation Club) as a group of guys who created the club from scratch so we could play A grade. We played in the grand final in A grade that year but lost. Roger and I were the two opening bowlers.

    1. Thanks for this Ian. Yes I know Brian Prettyjohn and last saw him a couple of years ago. I played about half a season of cricket with Postals when Brian was playing there.I remember Frank also but didn't remember him playing for Nightcliff. Perhaps it wasn't the one season I played with Wanderers. There were quite a number of guys I knew from Adelaide who were playing footy and cricket when I was in Darwin. You might remember the late Bob Keynes. He was up there then.

  5. Yes Geoff I remember Bob Keynes from cricket band football . I remember he didn't mind a beer or two either. I remember you playing for West Adelaide as I have supported the Bloods all my life as still go to most of their games . I trained with the colts in 1967 but started work with the PMG in March 1967 and had work saturday mornings with stopped me from playing. A good friend of mine is on the History committee at West Adelaide and has been interviewing past players in line with producing a book on the West Adelaide Football club.

    1. Hi Nathan. I don't really remember those names but that could be due to getting older. I effectively stopped playing about 1973. Good to hear from you and tanks for your comments.

    1. Hi Brenton. Good to hear from you. That's you in the middle row with Brian Hodge on your left isn't it?Yes I remember we played in the same team. The club eventually just disbanded or amalgamated into some other competition. I am not sure. I still talk to Dean wood on the phone occasionally and a couple of other giys have been on touch here as well.Yes Johnny Page was a very good player. I think he had another stint with North Adelaide after he left Postels. We had a lot of good players and manyb could have played in the SANFL in my opinion. They were good days. All the best to you too and I hope you are well considering the current situation we find ourselves in. Geoff

  10. Hi Geoff, Im Norm Bennett and I live in Ceduna. I gather you have an interest in the PIFC. I knew Trevor Gooch and his Dad who both feature in the above photos. Back in the day Postals held cabaret nights at the Torrens Arms Hotel being a friend of Trevors we were part of a group of regular attendees. They were good nights but as a two pot drunk my (now) wife often drove me home.
Now comes the shot in the dark. A bloke named Andy (in the pictures) was a bit of a whizz with song writing and a ukelele. Is there any chance someone may have the words to the one of his songs called, An then a dirty big ruckman knocked me down. regards, Norm
